A quick introduction to Incontinence

The severity of this common condition ranges from a “small leak” when you cough or sneeze to a “total loss” of all bladder and or bowel control.

The term “incontinence” refers to:

• The Involuntary loss of urine from the bladder – known as urinary incontinence
• The Involuntary passing of bowel motions from the bowel – known as faecal or bowel incontinence

The severity of this common condition ranges from a “small leak” when you cough or sneeze to a “total loss” of all bladder and or bowel control.

Incontinence can be caused or linked to many factors such as:

• Getting older – natural age progression
• Neurological disorders such as Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, Dementia
• Health conditions such as a Stroke, Brain tumour, Diabetes, Prostate problems, Spinal injury, Urinary stones, Constipation, Obesity and Urinary tract infections
• Pregnancy
• Menopause
• Specific surgeries such as as a hysterectomy (removal of all or part of the uterus or the ovaries) or a prostatectomy (removal of all or part of the prostate)
• Certain medications can also have a side effects linked to incontinence
